over 50 per cent. In the 3rd year's class, all answered above 40 per cent. in literature, and 5 out of 7 over 60 per cent. in history.

The history questions will be found to range over the entire subject of study in each class. In the literature examination I have to acknowledge the valuable aid of Mr. Green and of Mr. R. X. Murphy, of whom the former examined all the classes in English literature, and the latter set them subjects for English essays. In returning the essays, Mr. Murphy remarks, "My judgment was in each case a compound one, formed from the thought, language, grammar, and spelling, in fact, from the general impression left on my mind after reading each essay."
