A COMPLEAT HISTORY OF ENGLAND, deduced from the descent of Julius Cæsar to the Treaty of Aix-la-Chapelle, 1748, containing the Transactions of one thouLond. 1757-58, 4to. 4 vols. Garrick, 2134, sand eight hundred and three years. 14s.-Second edition, 11 vols. Lond. 175860. Continuation (1763-65), 5 vols. 8vo. together 16 vols. with ports., &c. (The 16th vol., for 1765, was written by Wm. Guthrie, during Smollett's absence on the continent.) It is stated that more than 10,000 copies of this history were sold, and that Smollett cleared upwards of 2000l. by it. Excepting those volumes which are taken as a continuation of Hume, and were afterwards printed separately in 5 vols. (more or less), Smollett's History is little read or quoted. Adolphus, in the last edition of his History (1840), vol. i. p. 175, does not hesitate to avow, that in the former editions he (Adolphus) concealed the fact of the first symptoms of George the Third's insanity, because he knew that the king did not wish it to be brought into notice; adding, "So anxious were the ministers on this point, that Smollett, having intimated it in his 'Complete History of England,' the text was revised in the general impression. A very few copies in the original form were disposed of, and they are now rare,"
