John-continued. ny, but falling into the hands of Powhatan, the chief king, and about to be put to death, his life was saved by Pocahontas, the king's daughter, of twelve or thirteen years of age. This princess afterwards became the wife of a Mr. Rolfe, whom she accompanied to England in 1616, when Captain Smith presented a Petition to Queen Anne in favour of his deliverer; and he has introduced her portrait (No. 4) into his History of Virginia. These particulars are contained in Beverley's History of Virginia, 1705, p. 26, with a copy of the petition. See also a long account of him in Seward's Anecdotes of Eminent Persons, Lond. 1804, 8vo. vol. ii. p. 267.

Some of the original copies contain a duplicate of the so-called stone plate, one of which being printed from an engraved stone (the first ever attempted,) broke after a certain number were taken off, and was necessarily omitted in part of the edition. The early copies have a title-page on which the name of JOHN SIDNEY HAWKINS appears, and a dedication to George III. signed 'The Author;' also duplicate pages 251, 2, 3, 4. On pages 252 and 254 will be found the name of Mr. Hawkins. These pages are usually cancelled, and in such copies will commonly be found Mr. John Thomas Smith's Vindication, being an answer to a pamphlet written and publisned by John Sidney Hawkins, Esq., F.A.S., concerning Mr. J. T. Smith's conduct to Mr. Hawkins, in relation to the Antiquities of Westminster. N.B. To be bound up with the work immediately after the advertisement.
