craft was not the legitimate outcome of the teachings of the Bible; but an excrescence upon it, claiming its sanction. The whole movement was at bottom an acute paganising of Christianity, under auspices nominally Christian. The doctrines and practices of witchcraft, even part of the legislation against it, were pre-Christian. These facts dispose of the adverse comments of Huxley, in this regard.1
