Catalogues received since going to press will be noticed in Part 3.

In re-issuing in a new and revised form the first volume of their now phenominally-successful commercial venture Book-Auction Records (which began as Sale Records), Messrs. Karslake & Co. have exhibited more than ordinary faith in the public appreciation of a "good thing." Commenced in the season 1902-3, Sale Records, though not an absolute loss could not be termed a successful venture commercially, and as a literary production fell far short of the standard of excellence which we have now learned to associate with B.A.R. (the Bookseller's Annual Refresher !). The fact is Mr. Frank Karslake had not then been appointed Editor, and in a publication of this character the editorial work is no mean part of the work. To assemble together about 14,000 records, and arrange them in the most useful concise, and get-at-able form requires qualities not to be found in everyone. Mr. Karslake is perhaps an ideal Editor-nothing is too small or unimportant to be left to chance or the printer. The placing of a punctuation mark is an important matter-the abridgment of a word means more than the necessary saving of space It is the result of this constant thoughtful care that we see in the five handsomely printed volumes now offered for five guineas, uniformly bound in crimson cloth, with gilt tops. When it is considered that these volumes contain some eighty thousand records (about 800 for a shilling !) it will be readily admitted that a bookseller might spend his money more frivolously than in putting the complete set on his reference shelves. As we have already more than hinted the new edition of the first volume (called Vol. I., part 1, from the exigencies of publication) before us is edited by Mr. Frank Karslake, and of course arranged in one alphabet, thus dispensing with an index and its accompanying weary necessity of turning backwards and forwards. Every entry has been subjected to the closest scrutiny, and the multiplicity of errors which marred the first edition corrected. Three interesting illustrations are added from photographs taken specially for the purpose, and will be very welcome to lovers of Keats. One is of Lawn Bank, Hampstead, which remains in precisely the same condition as when Keats lived there. It was there the poet wrote St. Agnes and Hyperion, and commenced Endymion. Another is of the famous mulberry Tree at Lawn Bank, in whose branches sang the nightingale who inspired Keats to rush indoors and write the immortal Ode to a Nightingale. The third plate reproduces the bust of Keats in Hampstead Church. It is quite possible that some booksellers who already possess Sale Records may think it a waste of money to buy Book-Auction Records, Vol. I., Part 1. We can assure them that is an erroneous opinion: there is as great a difference between the two as between chalk and cheese. The former is not only practically valueless on account of its errors, but is a time-waster on account of its arrangement; the latter is a valuable and completing link in the chain of records from 1902 to 1907. "When the blind lead the blind" might be said of the first edition, but the second is a guide whose eyes are as wide open as-well, as Frank Karslake's!"-THE CLIQUE, April 4th, 1908.
