BOOK-AUCTION RECORDS Where no sizes are given the books are 8vo. et infra. Where no binding is stated it is understood to be the original cloth or paper covers, as published. The following is a key to the abbreviations: When a binding is stated to be for example, mor. ex. t. e. g., the term t. e. g. -i.e. top edges gilt-implies that the other edges are uncut. When the other edges are cut the fact is stated. In some exceptional cases—such, for instance, as a first edition of Waverley' or of a Keats' Endymion '-when the condition of " original boards, uncut exists, and accounts for an abnormal price, the description is given in full, without abbreviation. In some instances autographs are stated in the sale-catalogues to be on the titles, or elsewhere in the books. When such autographs are not mentioned in B. A .R. it is only because they are of no known persons, and have no bearing whatever on the prices realized. Titles are abbreviated only in the case of books in Lowndes and Brunet, and when not in these works the titles are given verbatim from the sale-catalogue. The right-hand column of each page gives the names of the auctioneers, (and the date of the sale), as follows: "S. Dec. 7 " would therefore represent Sotheby's Dec. 7, 1907, while any month from January to August refers, of course, to the year, 1908. The spelling of B. A. R. is always that of the original titles, and apparent errors are not misprints. The same applies to some accents in foreign languages of which the type does not invariably permit; and, also, to old and erroneous punctuation. The following was sold at Sotheby's on May 31st. 1907, and was accidentally omitted from the volume of that year. Dryden (John) Lachrymae Musarum. Tears of the Muses, 1st Edn., front. and folding sheet at page 1 (some margins frayed), orig. sheepskin, T. Newcombe, 1649-50 Quaritch, £45 * Contains the earliest appearance of Dryden in print, when he was at Westminster School. There are two issues of the book, one 1649, the other 1650. The former has 27 contributions, the latter has 36. The earlier title-page was suppressed, and the 1650 title substituted. Two leaves were added between pages 42-3, and 9 leaves after page 74. The above copy is important, as it shows the book and the titles in both states, and besides has also inserted signatures F1 and F2, containing a postscript " and the "Marvell " poem (which had also been given previously). These two leaves are extremely rare, and were cancelled in the majority of copies. A. (A. J. D.) Théorie et la Pratique du Jardinage, folding plates, old cf., Dec. 12 S. Nov. 22 Maggs, 16s. S.
